GIZ and APTMA conduct workshop on energy management
September 08, 2014 (Pakistan)
The German International Cooperation (GIZ), on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany, in collaboration with the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) successfully conducted a workshop for energy management.
The 6-day training workshop, named Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Project (REEE), for energy managers of the textile industry, was conducted on the topic ‘Energy Efficiency and Financial Modelling of energy Projects’. The workshop was conducted by APTMA along with Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA).
At the conclusion of the training programme, Senior Advisor of GIZ, Dr. Frank Fecher said the participants of the training workshop were highly motivated and were responsive to the trainer on every point. Each participant who successfully passed the final exam was awarded a certificate and has become a new certified energy manager. About 30 new energy managers were added to APTMA member mills.
He said that the aim of the workshop is that each member mill will have an energy team to increase energy efficiency in the textile industry in Pakistan. The megawatts saved through energy efficient processes will be the contribution of the textile industry to overcome the energy shortage in Pakistan.
GIZ has also declared that it will further support APTMA in conducting this kind of training. Therefore, APTMA jointly with GIZ will conduct more energy manager trainings in the last quarter of 2014.
Fecher said that APTMA and GIZ together have achieved many targets which include, saving ten megawatts electricity and implementation of energy management system in several textile mills in Pakistan. They have successfully trained around 150 energy managers through training workshops held across the country.
According to the techno-economic studies and reports by GIZ-REEE on renewable energy, many textile mills were considering adopting renewable energy for power and steam generation, in particular, energy co-generation through biomass, he added.
The APTMA and GIZ cooperation started in 2008, followed by setting up of an Energy Cell, which later on converted into Sustainable Production Centre (SPC) in 2012.
The prime objective of the SPC-APTMA is to make the textile industry sustainable by extending technical services to the textile industry which include energy efficiency, renewable energy and trainings for the technical managers of the textile sector of Pakistan. In 2015, the portfolio of SPC-APTMA will be complemented by social standards and water management in process technology prevailing in APTMA member mills. (GK)
