7.79% growth of surgical, non-woven disposables in 2017-21

The global surgical and non-woven disposable market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.79 per cent in the next four years. Cost effectiveness of nonwoven medical textiles and the rise of single-use spinal products will drive this market though rise in volume of harmful disposable waste will be a major challenge, a new report says.

Surgical nonwovens are absorbent pads; apparels for patients, surgeons, and staff; bed linen; gowns; facemasks; pillows and shoe covers; sponges; towels; and wraps. These products prevent the spread of infections.

According to the report by Dublin-based Research and Markets, the increasing volume of medical waste generated, even by developed countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, is an environmental concern. Developing countries such as China and India have stringent regulations regarding the disposal of medical waste, says a press release from the company.

Prominent players in this sector include 3M Company, Cardinal Health, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Abbott Laboratories, Ahlstrom, Ansell, Bard (CR), Bayer, Becton, Dickinson, Boston Scientific, Braun, Hartmann, Kimberly-Clark, Lohmann & Rauscher, Medline Industries, Smiths Medical (Smiths Group) and Stryker, the report added.
