PSC Approves 24 Varieties Of Crops
The Punjab Seed Council has approved 24 new varieties of different crops including seven varieties of wheat, one non-BT cotton, three paddy, two varieties of grams, three of tomatoes, two varieties of potatoes and one each of maize, sugarcane, mustard, rye, sesame and bitter gourd. The approval came at the council’s 47th meeting which was held at the Punjab Agriculture House with Agriculture Minister Farrukh Javed chairing it.
The wheat varieties approved include two varieties having zinc and iron called NR-421 and NR-399 developed by the National Agricultural Research Council in Islamabad. In his address, Minister Javed said his government was working to introduce more new yielding varieties of different crops under the Kisan Package worth Rs 100 billion announced by the chief minister. He also said steps were being taken to promote the seed industry and enhance the per acre yield of cotton. He then talked about the early sowing cotton production starting and about growers getting Rs 3,000 per mound of their produce. The meeting also saw the Agriculture (Marketing) special secretary, Additional Agriculture (Planning) Secretary Ghazanfar Ali, Deputy Managing Director and Punjab Seed Council Secretary Nasir Saleem, Agriculture (Extension) Director General Anjum Ali and Punjab Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department Regional Director Masood Qamar Qureshi.
